Amalgamation

Greenmeadows and Taradale. FORMATION OF BOROUGH. COMMITTEE SET UP TO CONFER WITH TOWN BOARD “Napier doesn’t want us—only at Mardi Cras times. We can get on very well without them, but not the wav we are going. If we want to progress Greenmeadows must amalgamate with Taradale iin their proposal to form a borough,”

Thus spoke Mr S. Williams at Saturday night’s meeting of the Greenmeadows Progressive League, following the reading of a letter from the Taradale Town Board, eno iirmg whether the residents of Greenmeadows were willing to consider the question of the formation of a borough, to embrace Taradale and n portion of Greenmeadows. The letter informed the meeting that the Town Board was desirous of proceeding with the preparation of the petition from the Town District, but before doing so they would le obliged if Greenmeadows would again consider the question, as it was understood that quite a number of ratepayers had intimated a desire for union, with a view to mutual advancement.

Mr P. McCormick was of the omnion that the time had come when both suburbs should combine in order that progress could be assured. On their own they do not do anything, but with amalagmation their status would be vastly improved. Mr S. Williams: The time is coming when the Health Department will make us move How far can we progress with the County Council.' A voice: Nowhere. MUST DO SOMETHING. The chairman (Mr J. Rockel): There is not the slightest doubt that little townships like ours must must do something. Mr E. T. Rees: Our chance of getting improvements is to merge with Taradale. It is necessary that we should have modern improvements. Look at the difficulty we are having about a few street lights! We must be public spirited and join in with Taradale. as I am sure an amalgamation would be for the benefit of all. It would be ridiculous ror us to stand aloof.

Mr Williams: Amalgamation has got to come, and I think that we should move in the matter without delay I move:

“That a commitee ba formed to go Into the matter and confer with members of the Taradale Town Board.”

The chairman: The question is. can we benefit by amalgamation without extra rating? 1 don’t think we can. but that we can find out, Mr Williams’ motion w.s then agreed to and the following committee appointed :—Messrs Rees. Roekell, Wright. McCormick. Goudie. Pollock, and Andersen. STREET LIGHTS.

A discussion then followed unon a letter from the Counts Council regarding street lights in Greenmeadows. Various speakers contended that the residents received certain benefit from the lights inialled bv the T*rndale Town Board, and that the board should receive maintenance from the County Council for the same. The meeting decided that a netition should be presented to the Napier Harbour Board asking that he mouth of the Saltwater creek be opened up.
