PIECE WORK SYSTEM.

PAYMENT BY RESULTS EXTENSION ADVOCATED. (Special to “Tribune.”) Wellington, Aug. 13. In his speech on the financial debate last night. Mr. D. Jones (Ellesmere) touched the Labour party on a sore point in advocating the extension of the piece work system and payment by results. He considered that if the gardeners in the parliamentary grounds were employed on piece work their wages would be doubled and it would be better for the men. Mr. W E. Parry (Auckland Central) : That is the way to run New Zealand.

Mr. Jones said that the standard of living could not be kept up unless production costs were reduced. He knew the New Zealand worker and what he could do. Mr. Parry : And he knows you too!

Hie Labour party did not like piece work, said Mr. ,>ones. because it knew that as soon as a man began to earn high wages he lost interestin his union.

Mr. P. Fraser (Wellington Central) : Some of the strongest unions are on niece work. Mr. Jones said that the Government should press forward the introduction of the contract svstem. and that every member of the Labour party got into the House by piece work. Mr. W. J. Jordan (Manukau): How did you get in? The Labour party, urged Mr. Jones, should be prepared to give the other fellow a chance in order that the interests of New Zealand and not unionism should lie placed first. The Reform party could not remain in newer unless it had a verybig part of the workers’ vote and as a party it must have well-paid and satisfied workmen to assist in the government of the country. He would like to see the Labour party assist in the matter but that was almost too much to hope for. Mr. Jordan: To assist you?
