Butter Control

Right in Principle. H. C. CAMERON’S OPINION. DAIRY BOARD’S METHODS CONDEMNED. (Per Press Association). Auckland, Aug. 12. Mr. H. C. Cameron, for many years Produce Commissioner for the New Zealand Government in London, arrived by the Ruahine yesterday, Mr. Cameron did not know until he arrived that control had been abandoned. Ho was entirely opposed to the policy recently carried out by the Dairy Board in London, which he termed as “appalingly tackless and unbusinesslike.” He considered that control, if properly conducted, is essential to the success of the dairying industry and is certairfiy in the interests of the dairy farmers of the Dominion, “I feel that reversion to the old system of disposal of dairy produce will mean disaster,” he said. “I considei that consignment through the Board of Producers’ Representatives in Loudon for distribution by agents selected by the dairy factories and approved by and in close association with that board, is the proper method of securing the best results. Speculative buyers of factory outputs, f.o.b in the Dominion, use their purchasers to further their own ends and they have no interest in the welfare of the factories. There should be one uniform system of the disposal of New Zealand dairy produce. “Absolute control is a power with such far-reaching effects that it should be sued only in a case of extreme necessity. I am satisfied that it was never intended to be used as it has been used by the Daily Board.” His opinion was that the board had mismanaged control and this mismanagement had been the work on which the New Zealand dairy industry had been split and wrecked.
