HOSPITAL PATIENTS.
BIG INCREASE REPORTED. 17000 IN FOUR YEARS. The remarkable increase in the number of hospital patients treated over the past tew years is shown by the Government Statistician, Mr Malcolm Fraser, who says that the number increased from 51 159 in 1922 to 68,391 in 1926 During the same period the rate rose from 392 per 10,000 of population to 484. Judging from the rate alone, Mr Fraser says, these figures represent an increase of 23J per cent.,' or an average annual increase of nearly per cent.
Over such a short period as four years these increases are remarkable, and disclose the extent to which the public gnerally is taking advantage of the facilities for medical treatment placed at its disposal by the various public hospitals. Figures for last year reveal that one person out of every 21 in the Dominion received some degree of medical treatment in public hospitals. If outdoor patients treated by the public hospitals, 66,000 dumg 12 months ended March 31 1926, and patients treated in private’ hospitals and in homes are reckoned, at least one in 10 would be -found to be under medical treatment.
