NEWS AND NOTES. (Own Correspondent). Mrs. Groome entertained the members of the ladies’ branch of the Farmers’ Union at afternoon tea on Tuesday, when 50 books were donated to the book library fund by Mesdames J. Blundell, Leslie Wilson, P. F. Wall, H. M. Rathbone, T. H. Groome, Paul Hunter, Kibblewhite, Mitchell, Keir, Mathieson, Hole, Black, Clark, J. D. Ormond, Harold Kay, Misses Mcßae, Wilson and Beachen.

Messrs. Cardston and Baxter left by train on Tuesday evening for Dannevirke, en route to Eltham, where they are to produce “Les Cloches de Corneville” for the Eltham Operatic Society. Members of the local society were at the station to farewell’them, and cheers were given as the train went out. The new manse for St. Andrew’s Church, erected at a cost of about £lBOO, by Messrs. Wharmby and Williams, has reached the stage of completion, and subject to the carrying out of ground imp ovements, is ready for occupation. During June, 44 patients were admitted to the Hospital, and 73 discharged. There are at preesnt 55 patients under tratment—£o women and children, and 34 men, and 1 case in isolation.

Tuesday was “Hatuma Day” at the Pukeora Sanatorium. The following ladies contributed gifts:—Mesdames Collins, John Wilson, J. Hobson, Schroder, Lawther, H. Hobson, Kibblewhite, Hole Burnett, Riddle, Wall, D. Sim, Grant, Haldane, Groome, J. Williams, and J. G. Wilson, Misses Meßae and Shand. Miss Helen Hunter kindly assisted the organisers by conveying the parcels in her car to the Sanatorium, from Waipukurau. The monthly meeting of the Plunket Society was held in the Salvation Army Hall on Tuesday, Mrs. McCormick presiding. There were presen:t Mesdames Broad, Bates, Clarkson, Chambe s, de Lacey, Harding, Hopkinson, Paul Hunter, Leigh, Mathieson, Nicholls, Ormond, and Ward. The nurse’s report was read and considered very satisfactory. Visits to rooms: \ Waipukurau, adults 139, babies 139; Takapau, adults 17, babies 17. Visits to homes: Waipukurau 91; Takapau 32; Elsthorpe, 1; Wallingford, 3; and Onga Onga 4. Subscriptions were received from Dr. Chambers, Clarkson, Mathieson, Tansley, Saunderson, and Ward. Also a cheque from the Operatic Society (Joy Germs production) for £4 9/2. Mr. W. Peterson is acting as masseur, pro tern, for a month, at the Hospital, Miss Ferguson being absent on holiday leave at present. In regard t the vacant position of district nurse at Porangahu, Miss L-lchmore, lately of Whangaroa, has been appointed to the post by the Walpawa Hospital Board, from six applicants.
