VORONOFF TREATMENT

TRIED IN NEW ZEALAND. Farmers throughout the country ar© awaiting with interest the results of the Voronoff grafting experiments carried out by Dr. Pickerill, of the Otago University. At a meeting of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union Otago Provincial Council th© secretary, Mr. S. P. Cameron, submitted an official report of the operation. “The doctor was particularly interested in this phase of grafting, and stated that he would be willing to carry out the operations without fee if we would make the necessary arrangements,” said Mr. Cameron- Dr. Pickerill is. by the way, one of the pioneers in the grafting of human tissues. These arrangements were made, and the operations were conducted at Lovell’s Flat on two of Mr. Jasper Clarke’s stud Leicester rams, and at “Prospect,” Becks, on two stud Romney rams—the property of Mr. T. H. Mee. I have since received reports from both these gentlemen that the rams have not looked back.

“It is claimed that the graft has the effect of restoring th© lost potency in an aged animal, and of producing a heavier-woolled and more virile offspring if carried out on young sheep. Dr. Pickerill stated that it will probably be three Or four months before any marked effect is noticed in the beasts which have received the graft. We have made arrangements to have photographs taken periodically and forwarded to Dr Pickerill, who will make reports to the executive from time to time. The Department of Agriculture assisted at these operations, and the union’s thanks are due to them for their courtesy. Dr. Pickerill is leaving for Australia very shortly, having taken up a practice in Sydney, and we believe that his departure from these shores will mean a national loss.

The report was adopted by the meeting, and it was decided to forward a letter of thanks to Dr. Pickerill expressing, in view of his departure for Australia, the appreciation of the union for what he had done on behalf of the farmers of the Dominion.
