Racing Conference Opened. HUNT CLUB’S PROTEST. LONGER HURDLE RACES ADVISED. (Per Press Association). Wellington, July 18. The Racing Conference opened today, Sir George Clifford presiding The annual report was presented, lhe 1 rotting Conference aiso opened, and Mr Nicoll presented the annual report.

lhe Hunt Clubs' Association last night passed the following resolution. “That this association views with alarm the reported action, ol the Dates Committee in allocating Labour Day, which has been the date tor every totalisator meeting held by the Waikato Hunt Club, to the Wai kato Racing Club, and requesting the Waikato Hunt Club to select a date othei than Labour Day. It was pointed out that hunt clubs act as feeders to racing clubs. No less than 20 jumpers competing at Trentham on the first day graduated from the hunting field.

The stipendiary stewards reported that the meetings had been efficiently controlled, and great improvement effected. It was suggested that enforcement of the rule regarding unruly horses be rigorously adhered to. Attention was drawn to the large number of fatal accidents, mainly in jumping events, attributable, in the committee’s opinion, to many shortdistance hurdle-races. Clubs would be well advised to have no hurdle race less than two miles on the programme. This would quickly do awav with the inclusion of many squibs in contests. No hurdle race should be permitted on a course of less than a mile in circumference. The report was adopted.

The Dates Committee regrets that, contrary to promises with regard to applications for new totalisator licenses the Minister has allotted the Franklin and Taumarunui Racing Clubs one-day licenses without first consulting the conferenct or the committee/ thereon. Under the circumstances, the committee has no option but to grant the Franklin Racing Club xMarch S and Taumarunui De cember 12, utilising licenses previously granted to Waverley and Nelson. Highweight Handicaps are now races in winch the minimum weights shall not be less than 8 stone.

Taranaki’s application to have its representation increased to two votes was refused. When sufficient hurdle steeplechase jockeys are not available tor jumpers’ flat races a licensed jockey may now be engaged at a 7 pound penalty. In future horses the property oi one. owner and running in separate divisions of a race in which the totalisator is opened only once, will be bracketed. WELLINGTON MEETING. FIRST DAYS RUNNING.
