The World’s Shipping

Increased Construction.

MOTOR SHIP BUILDING BOOMING.

OUTSTANDING FEATURES IN REGISTER.

(By Cable —Press Assn. — Copyright.)

(R«ceived 13, 10.20 a.m.) London, July 12. A gradual improvement in the tonnage under construction throughout the world, and the leaps and bounds in motor ship building, are the outstanding features recorded in Lloyd’s Register.

The latest shipbuilding returns show that in the three months ended June 30, 1,390,388 tons altogether were under construction in Britain and Ireland, which is 173,356 more than at the end of March, and 549,000 above the figures a year ago. The present total, indeed, is the highest since September, 1924, though still 500,000 tons below the average tonnage being built a year before the war. The total building in other countries, 1,450,107, shows an increase of 97,000 tons over the previous three months. Approximate figures for the leading foreign countries are:— Germany 408,000 Italy 217,000 Holland 172,000 United States 147,000 France 136,000

For the first time, motor ship construction throughout the world, namely 1,459.595 tuns, exceeds that of steamers, though an analysis of the figures shows that in Britain and Ireland it is only 82.9 per cent, of the steam tonnage.—(A.P.A. and “Sun” cable.)
