TESTING AMERICAN STRENGTH. New York, Sept. 9. An English cricket team, including several Australians, captained by E. J. Metcalf, have arrived and proceeded to the Crescent Athletic Club, where they will play matches on Friday and Saturday, thence entraining for Philadelphia, where they will engage in eight matches, beginning ou September 22.— (A. and N.Z.) PLAYERS v. GENTLEMEN. London, Sept. 9. Players, in their first innings, made 144 (Allen took five for 40), and in the second 39 for one. Gentlemen in the first innings made 198 (Chapman 101; Kennedy took six for 82). The match was abandoned owing to rain. Cowdray’s eleven in the first innings, made 314 for eight, declared (Hurdinge 94, Jeacockc 86; Tate took five for 77), and in the second 150 (Gilligan took seven for 90, and Tate three foi 37). The Rest of England, in the first innings, made 367 (Relf .114, Stephens 121) and in the second 107 for six (Reuter). TO PLAY YORKSHIRE. London, Sept. 9.
