AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY. SEMI-FINALS ON FRlbkX. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, Sept. 10. Beautiful weather cenmtions prevailed for the continuation of the New land golf tournament to-day. Results of the matches in the third round of the amateur championship were:— G. F. Gunson defeated R. D. \\ right (AucklftiUl), 3 and 2. L. Quin (Eltham) defeated J. (SVanganui), 5 and 4. J. uoss (Wanganui) defeated J. L. Black (tlutt), 3 and i. Fl. B. Lusk (Auckland) defeated A. E. Conway (Mnamaa), 5 and 4. Surprise was caused by the defeat of , Wright (Auckland provincial champion) by Gunson, who is only 19. There was not much between the players. In the morning Gunson was one up and quickly increased it to 5 .up at the turn, in the afternoon he ! played very, steadily and Wright made > too many mistakes to catch him, Gunson winning 3 and 2. ! Goss scqred comfortably over Black. His lead was 6 up at lunch, and in the afternoon he maintained it until he unaccountably went off his putting and lost three holes in succession. This left him 3 up at the 11th, but he won the 12th and was 4 up again. Black took the next with a good putt, also the 15th and 16th, leaving Goss dormy 2. The 17th was the deciding hole, Goss winning 3 and 1. Harold was quite off form in his match with Quin and could do nothing right. He was 2 down in the morning and the game ended at the 14th in the afternoon. WANGANUI LADIES’ TOURNEY. (Per Press Association.) Wanganui, Sept. 10. The open championship under the auspices of the Wanganui Ladies’ Golf Clul) was commenced to-day in fine weather. The entries are very rei presentative of the low handicap play- , ers of New Zealand and excellent golf is being played. The semi-final contests of the amateur golf championship produced stirring struggles, leaving A. Russell (Victoria) and R. Sinclair (N.S.W.) to fight out the final on Friday.
