THE HASTINGS WEST SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A well attended meeting of the Committee for the Garden Party was held in the Hastings West School last evening, Mr A. J. Kirkham occupying the chair. A vote of condolence was passed with Mr McKee in connection, with the recent death of his daughter. It was decided to hold the celebrations in connection with opening of the grounds on Wednesday, October 15th. The Ladies' Committee reported‘,that attendants for the stalls had been arranged for. A canvassing Committee had been appointed, and .arrangement generally were well underway. The chairman reported that the Maoris of Bridge pa were prepared to assist with the entertainment. A subcommittee was appointed to interview the performers with a view of including several items on the programme. Lighting of the grounds was left with chairman to arrange. Arrangements were made for providing bran tubs, weight guessing, Aunt Bally and other side shows. /
The adoption of a school motto was brought up, and itiwas resolved to invito the pupils and ex-pupils of the school to suggest in /writing a suitable motto in English, a prize of 10/6 to be awarded to the sender of the motto ehosen. Suggestions to be in the hands of the secretary by October)Bth.
At the headmaster's suggestion, the qi-estion of the school colours )wus discussed and eventually a recommendation to parents was passed, (that the colours be: Girls, navy blue overalls and white blouse; boys: /black and white tic and cap, with dark grey shirt and dark pants, and socksywith a white top. The headmaster reported that during the recent holidays, a barometer and alarum clock had been stolen from the school, and the police had the matter in hand.
