NAPIER HARBOUR BOARD.

YESTERDAY’S MEETI NG. The following additional business was transacted at yesterday s Harbour Board meeting:— CORR ESPO.XDENCE. Napier Borough Council wrote regarding land south oi Ellison street and stating:— (a) That the Council cannot favourably consider tne suggestion to contribute with the narbour Board and Hawke s Bay County Council fur widening Ellison street through t 0 the Parade. Jhe opinion is aiso expressed that the Harbour Board should undertake the widening of Ellison street at its own expense. <bi That the Napier Harbour Board definitely define the area it is prepared to lease with or without a purchasing clause and to state the estimated cost oi such hind aiso to state whether the area would include say J 6 acres on the south side of the Napier High School site. also whether tiiere is any land on the Western side of the Tutaekuri, opposite Kennedy road, availabn? for occupation and if so whether the board is prepared to oiler same to the Council.

The chairman said in regard to* clausa (a) that an effort should be made to have the road widened. It would only mean that each ofithe three bodies concerned would have to contribute £lOO each. The chairman was empowered to arrange with the council tor a re-con-sideration of its action in regard to Ellison street, and it was decided that the council be informed that the board's offer is withdrawn re the area to bo leased. The Napier Returned Soldiers’ Association wrote asking if the board would find temporary employment for returned soldiers as hitherto, provided the association pays half the wagei involved.—The chairman had already acceded to the request, and his action was endorsed. A request from the Napier Watersider’s Union that more conveniences should be provided at the breakwater and at the inner harbour was referred to the Works Committee. GENERAL.

Mr. Chambers moved, and the chairman seconded, that Mr. Rochfort be asked to report on the drainage of the Maraenui block.—Carried. Mr. Vigor Brown moved: “That the chairman instruct th© secretary to write to Mr. Geo. Nelson asking him when he first knew that the present jiroposed entrance to th© inner harbour had to be abandoned and a new entrance made and whether ho took any stops (if he did know) to inform the chairman of th© board of the alteration.” Mr. Turner-Williams said th© motion was out of order, and he asked the chairman to giv© a ruling on it. Mr. Brown said Mr. Miller wrote a letter and sent it to the press in connection with the matter. The chairman said it had nothing to do with th© board at all. He knew nothing about it. and Mr. Nelson was entitled to his own opinion. He ruled the motion out of order. The harbourmaster (Mr. White-Par-sons) reported that August had been a very bad month for weather, consequently the steamers Flora, Orient

City and Rio Claro were detained in the hay prior to their berthing at the breakwater. The arrivals for the month were:—lnner harbour 24, breakwater 15. outer 3; total, 42. The hoard expressed its sympathy with the following resolution from the Hastings Chamber of Commerce: — “That this chamber urges (1) the reduction of sea freights to Napier, (2) more frequent services between southern ports and Napier, and (3) the establishment of a port mark for Eastings goods.” 'I he works committee recommended that the request of D. Gillies for a lease of the island known as “The Watchman” be not acceded to. The works committee reported, in reference to Mr. W. A. Chambers’ notice of motion, “That the C.D.K. be removed to the Awatoto block and worked under orderg. from the office through the secretary,” that the master of the dredge C.D.K. was forthwith instructed to proceed to the Serpentine with a view to reclamation work on the Awatoto Block. This action was taken so that the dredge would not be kept idle in the meantime.—Adopted FINANCE. ,
