Italian Chauvinism

The Flume Demand BELGRADE UNABLE TO ACREE. EXTENSION OE ULTIMATUM REQUESTED. [By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.] London, Sept. 10. A fresh cloud in the European sky over the Fiume complications between Italy and Jugo-Slavia is not dispelled by the latest news. It is understood that the Belgrade Government, has decided that it is quite unable to agree to Italy’s proposal that Porto Barross and the delta should pass under the sovereignty of Jugoslavia, but remain indissolubly bound to the city of Fiume for 99 years, particularly as the Treaty of Rapallo recognised the Italian character of Fiume.

The Jugo-Slav Government is, therefore, requesting an extension of the Italian ultimatum beyond September 15, in order that the negotiations may continue, and, if necessary, the whole question be referred to the Swiss for arbitration. —(Reuter.) THE CORFU OCCUPATION. EVACU A T lON DEFER R ED. London, Sept. 11. The “Daily Telegraph’s” diplomatic correspondent says: “The Italian Government seems to assume that it need npt evacuate Corfu until the whole of the Janina inquiry is completed. This would spell undue protraction of the present temporary regime in Corfu and involve danger of further ugly incidents. The rights of the League Council or Assembly have in no way .suffered diminution by British or Alliled action. Unless the interpretation of the Ambassadors’ Conference entailing immediate Italian evacuation is accepted by Rome, the issue must still be dealt with at Geneva.”—(A. and N.Z.) SECURITY FOR INDEMNITY. DEPOSITED BY GREECE. Geneva, Sept. 10. M. Politas informed the Council of the League of Nations that Greece was depositing in a Swiss bank the amount agreed upon as security for the Italian indemnity to-morrow at the latest. — (A. and N.Z.) THE JANINA MURDERS. COMMITTED BY ALBANIANS. (Received 12, 12.30 p.m,) Athens, Sept. 11. Bosari has returned from the Epirus. Hie reports that the Greek inquiry leaves no doubt that Albanians were the authors of the assassination.—(A. and N.Z.)
