TARADALE.

(Own Correspondent.) Now the tumult and shouting have ceased, secretary Manley and his coworkers of the Taradale League Football Club, invite the populace to enjoy themselves at their annual ball which takes place on Friday next in the Taradale Town Hall. The Moteo orchestra of eight instruments is to be responsible lor the music. A guarantee is given that the supper provided will remain a pleasant memory long after the eclipse of the sun and the Taradale Town Board elections are forgotten. Cards of admission are in greater demand than would be the tickets on a 7.50 tram to the pictures, and a record attendance is assured. Many justified complaints are being raised against the present mail service, for a progressive suburb like Taradale, it is most inefficient. The mail closes at 7.40 a.m and does not arrive in Napier until nearly eleven o’clock, it being taken in the mail van round through Puketapu, Fern hill and Mahora, which accounts for the delay. Until recent years we had a mail service which connected with the south-bound express, which suited the convenience of the residents of this township. There is a strong agitation in favour of having this service restored. The late Town Board endeavoured to get an improvement in the mail service, but their efforts were fruitless. It is to be hoped that the newly elected board will take the matter up and induce the Postmaster General to grant a restoration of the service that this township is justly entitled to. The Choral society which was formed about two months ago has been taken up enthusiastically by about forty vocalists in the township. They are improving very rapidly under the baton of Mr. J. Rochels. Their performance at the practice held last night was most creditable, the voices blending in perfect harmony. They intend giving a choral concert in about a month’s time, which shall be a rare treat for lovers of choral music. The newly formed social club is proving to he a great asset to the young people of the township. Handicrafts ,sucn as basket-making, leather and various metal work are being taken up several members have made rapid progress and have madd many articles both of artistic and userul nature. Their work reflects great credit upon the teachers who have given their services free. A club of this sort was required years ago and those respoiisible for its inception can see the fruitful results of their efforts. To promote the welfare of their young people other townships could do well by inaugurating clubs of this nature. A petition, which was largely signed, praying for the extension of the hours on the local telephone exchange, was presented a short time ago to the authorities for favourable consideration, but so far nothing has been heard of it. The request is a just one and nothing more than the township i s entitled to according to telephone exchange regulations. An exchange in such a progressive township as this with such a large number of subscribers should be opened until a later hour than what it is. At present it is opened from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and closed on Sundays and holidays. The gala day held last Saturday was a striking illustration of when the Town Board should he commended for its progressive policy in providing such an ideal recreation ground for the district. Last winter, when the board spent about £lOO on its improvements, such as levelling and re-sowing, street corner opinion considered it a scandalous waste of money. The capital order of the grounds, more especially the track for running and cycling bore ample evidence for the justification of this expenditure. In spite oi the propheev that it would he a “white elephant” the park has proved a decided asset to Taradale.
