WARM AND DRENCHING.

BENEFICIAL RAIN. WHOLE DISTRICT SOAKED. This morning broke gloriously fine, in a shining sky, forming a delightful contract to the dripping conditions prevailing during the previous few days, when a torrential downfall deluged the district. The rivers, though running high, continued well within their banks. STREET TORRENTS IN NAPIER. Rain, which commenced to fall on Friday night, continued steadily all day Saturday and up till an early hour on Sunday mornuing. On oaturday afternoon it poured in torrents, with the result that the channels could not cope with the rush of water, and very soon the streets in the lower parts of Napier became flooded, and almost impassible t > pedestrian traffic. There was a big body of water at the Provincial Hotel corner, and other low ? lying portions of that locality. Owing to the extra high tide, portions ol Byron and Browning streets became flooded and made conditions extremely unpleasant for business people. However, as the tide reced.ed, the water got away. RIVERS CARRY 7 FLOOD WELL. The rain continuing, fears were entertained for a big flood, and farmers found it necessary to take precautions to remove their stock to more health' surroundings. In and around the laradale am. Meeanee districts, there was an unusual amount of surface water and the rising of the rivers was watched anxiously by settlers, but thanks to the improvements that have been carried out by. the Rivers’ Board, the flood waters were' able to get to sen. the channels being clear. GOOD SOAKING IN HASTINGS. The Hastings district got a thorough soaking and the rusli of watef in Hastings was sm great on Saturday night, when the rain was at its height. the channels overflowed at the Heretaunga street intersections- with Karamu road and Nelson streets causing the roadways to be flooded, when the rain abated, however, the channe.s quickly dealt with the storm and carried the waters away. In the low-lying localities, in the direction of Lyell street, the channels also did their work • and yesterday there was very little’water to be seen in that locality. On the outskirts there were patches of surface water lying about. On Saturday night the weather had all flood conditions but. although Sunday moriiincr was unpromising, the weather cleared up in the afternoon, -and this morning the conditions looked settled once more. The farming community express themselves as very pleased with the warm drenching and look forward to an abundant season
