NAPIER HIGH SCHOOL.
MONEY FOR NEW BUILDINGS. DEPUTATION* - TO MINISTER. MR. PARR RECOGNISES NEED. [Per Press. Association.i Wellington,, May 12. A deputation from the Napier High School Board waited on the Minister lor Education (Hon. C. J. Parr) and asked for the sum of £BOOO, in addition to money already in sight, towards the erection of a new' school and hostel. Members of the deputation were, Mr. Dinwiddie (chairman High School Board), Mr. G. F. Roach (chairman Education Board), Mr. Williams, and Mr W. jL. Dunn (secretary Education Board.) The speakers stated that the Napier High School Board had a definite promise of £12,000 for a new boys’ school, but had no definite grant for a hostel. The present school building was old, and had been condemned. The proposed site for a boys’ school contained about 28 acres, which it is estimated would cost about £7500. What they wanted was a further £BOOO. They also sought assistance to buy the site. They estimated they could provide £20,000 from their endowments and from the public. In replying, the Minister said he was in sympathy' with the desire for better conditions. The present building had seen its day, and was probably the most decrepit secondary school in New Zealand. He would place before Cabinet the question of providing a further sum of £BOOO towards the erection of a new school building'and hostel, and also at the same time would submit the question of providing £3500 towards the purchase of a site, on condition that the whole of the present boys’ school site was made available for an additional playground accommodation for the girls’ school, which was poorly provided for in this respect. He would recommend Cabinet to grant reasonable assistance.
