GRAND NATIONAL MEETING.

Sockburn, Aug. 15. The weather is fine but windy for the opening day of the Grana National meeting. There is a large attendance and the ground is good. Results:—

Hunt Club Cup.—Gaekwar 1, Dardanelles 2, Brown Joe 3. All started. Won by six lengths. Time, 7.7 3-5. Trial Hurdles.— Jeannot 1, Tornea 2, Master Boris 3. Scr : Turehua and Vascular. Won by three lengths half a length between second and third. Time, 3.22 4-5. Avonhead Handicap:—Hastie 1, Silver and Black 2. Jingo 3. Scratched Ardmore, Whiro. Won by a length. Time 1.16 4-5. Grand National Hurdles :—Kauri King 1, Sir Solo 2, Art 3. All started. Kauri King took charge before the last hurdles were reached and won easily by three lengths, four lengths between 2nd. and 3rd Time 4.48 2-5. FIRE. Thames. August 14. Fire last nicr’-’t t tal'v destroyed the Governor Ferguson Hotel and a cottage adjoining. The origin .of the fire is a mystery. The building was owned by Campbell Ehrenfried. of Auckland.
