NAPIER SOUTH.

DRAINAGE SCHEME CRITICISED. BY MEETING OF RATEPAYERS. A large meeting of Napier South ratepayers was held last evening to consider the drainage scheme, Mr. E. V. Hudson presiding. Mr. C. E. Smith explained the ob ject of the meeting, and said the letter from the Health Department to the Borough Council indicated that a competent engineer should he appointed. Cr. A. McCarthy spoke at some length, and said that the work was costing a great deal more than had been estimated. He considered that a consulting engineer should be employed. Mr. G. W. ‘Venables supported the manner in which the council is doing the work, and said the ratepayers would be unwise to saddle themselves with the cost of a consulting engineer. Crs. Hill and Runciman supported the proposal to urge the council to appoint a consulting engineer. Cr. G. Latham said the difficulties in connection with the drainage were being exaggerated. He believed the plans and specifications in the bauds or the council were sufficient to work on. After further discussion it was decided to ask the council to obtain the services of a ccAipetent consulting engineer before going on with the work, and Messrs. C. F. Smith. D. Duff and C. Bisson were appointed to wait on the council.
