Miss Mary Burnett, is on a visit to Otane. Mr. R. M. Dalton, H.M.. Trade Commisioner, arrived in Napier on Saturday. To-morrow he addresses the Napier Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. L. Aldridge, of Napier, is in Wellington to meet her son, Serst. G. P. Aldridge, who returned invalided on the Marama. They are due in Napier on Wednesday. Visitors to Napier include: —Miss Troutbeck, Wairoa; Miss Jones, Mrs. and Miss Devine, Mr. Dalton, Wellington: Mr. and Mrs. Theomin Dunedin; Mr. W. Carrow, Woodville.
The death is reported at Sydney of Etienne Deinestre. one of the makers of Australian turf history.. He was the owner of several old time Melbourne Cup winners.— Press Association.
Mr. Alex Wanson of “Awarua,” Hastings, received a cable last week from his son, Lieut. A. J. Wanson, who is attached to the 2nd N.Z. Machine Gun Company in France, stating that he was quite well.
Mrs. E. A. Watkins and Mrs. F. L. Powdrell and daughter are at present in Wellington on a visit to Private Alf Watkins, who is, ill in hospital at Trentham, but is now making satisfactory progress towards recovery. Mr. C. V. Brown, of Napier, who has accepted a sub-lieutenacy in the Motor Boat Patrol, was met on Saturday by the staff of Messrs JViffor Brown, Ltd., and presented with a case of military hair brushes and a money belt. Mr. H. E. Bourgeois made the presentation.
Mr. John Bungate, a very old settler at Palmerston North, has just died, after having resided in New Zealand for 71 years, of which 68 were silent in the Nelson district. His father, Mr. John Bungate, came to Nelson in the Will Watch in 1840. and the mother, with her son, arrived the following year. The death took place at the Wellington Hosoital on Thursday of a man named Harry Woods, a steward employed on the steamer Takapuna. Woods took suddenly ill some two or three days ago. and had been attended by Dr. Pollen. On Thursday be became considerably worse, and Dr. Pe'ddie ordered his removal to the. hospital, where he died shortly after admission. The deceased was a well-known servant of the Union Company, and was extremely popular With travellers.
