GAMING HOUSE RAIDED.

THIRTY SIX MEN ARRESTED. Auckland, Oct. 21. - An interesting side issue to the postponement of the races to-day was the raiding by the detectives of an alleged “two-up school in Durham street west and the arrest of thirty-six men who were there on charges of being found in a common gaming house. The place had been under suspicion for a considerable time and reasoning that the number of persons who had been disappointed of a day at the races would compensate themselves with the fascinating pastime of “heading ’em” Detectives Hamond, Cullen, Sweeney and Cummings deemed the time opportune for a raid on what theybelieved to be a two-up school. They invoked the assistance of Constable Trotter and Constable Neill, after having armed themselves with a search warrant, and made their way quietly to the place. The raid proved to be well timed for after managing to dispose strategically of the doorkeeper the party made a surprise entrance to the main room up above, where they found thirty-six men, ranged round a baize covered mattress on which a quantity of money was lying. The door was locked while nobody was permitted to leave the room. An S.O.S. message was sent out to the uniform police who rallied to the call and the men. in the. room were split up into parties of six and despatched under arrest to the police station in taxi-cabs. When the first party of arrastees went away word passed among the public in Queen street and almost at once a crowd of several hundred assembled and encouragely cheered each successive taxi-cab of arrested men on the way “up above.” have to go also. •
