The Austrian Retreat.

A Rally on the San River.

Broken by Gallant Bayonet Charge.

(Received 23, 9. 5 5 a.m.) Petrograd, Sept. 22. The Austrian retreat in Galicia is so rapid that the Russians had to cover 25 miles a day to keep in touch with them. The Austrians turned back at one point on the San. The Russians, throwing three pontoons over the river, dashed across, and a fierce hand-to-hand struggle ensued. The cavalry horses were shot down, and the men’s legs shattered, but the men continued to fire as they lay on the ground. At length a bayonet charge put the Austrians to flight.

General Dimitrieff has been decorated tor hrs brilliant and successful resistance when the Austrians attempted to recapture Lemberg. He was four days and nights fighting against odds of four to one.
