The Deputy-Mayor (Mr. W. Plowman) presided, and in proposing the toast of the guest, complimented him on the success which had attended his efforts in this district. In presenting the purse of sovereigns, the chairman said it was but a slight indication of the appreciation and friendship Mr. Jackson's many friends desired to express. Many other speakers endorsed the chairman’s remarks, including Messrs. S. E. Wright, P. Barry, J. B. Andrew-, F. Moeller, J. C. Bryant, G. ludehope and Dennis McCarthy. The speakers expressed deep regret at his departure, and wished him every success in his new sphere. Afterwards they drank their guest’s health, and sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow-.” Mr. Jackson, who w-as greeted with prolonged applause on rising to respond, said he trusted his successor (Mr. A. Donald) would receive similar treatment to what he had. As for himself, he considered his sojourn in Napier one of the happiest periods of his life. In conclusion, Mr. Jackson, w-ho was deeply affected by the kindness shown him, returned thanks for the handsome presentation.

Numerous other toasts were honoured, and a number of musical items were given. “Auld Lang Syne” w-as then sung, and the gathering dispersed.
