This afternoon a six-horse team and waggon coming from Havelock towards Hastings bolted and tore along the Havelock road for some distance. On the Havelock bridge the waggon met Warren’s Bakery cart. The horses managed to pass the cart, but the waggon collided with it, and Taylor was thrown from his seat. He was rendered unconscious, and had to be removed to one of the adjacent houses, : where he was attended by Dr. Nairn.

At a special meeting of the Hawke's Bay County Council today, Cr. W. G. Stead was appointed a member of the Board of the Managers of the Ngatawara Water Race. Mr. H. lan Simson says that he learns it has been rumoured that he intends standing down from the Hawke’s Bay general election in favour of Mr. R. McNab, but he states definitely that he has no intention of standing down, and will contest the seat against all comers. Mackersey. waited on the Commissioner of Crown Lands at Napier this morning, for the purpose of getting the waste Crown

land at the Grange for recreation purposes, and having the same vested in a board. The Commissioner replied that he would write to the Lands Department recommending that the deputation’s request- should be acceded to. He was sure it would be favourably considered by the Department. ‘The ‘Lion and the Mouse” was staged before a large audience by Williamson’s Dramatic Company at the Princess Theatre, Hastings, on Saturday'night. Miss Katherine Grey, as Shirley Rossmore, and Mr. William Desmond, as John Burkett Ryder, were the two principals in this powerful drama, and supported by one of the strongest combinations of dramatic artists that have yet been before Hastings theatregoers, they proved themselves stars of the first magnitude. A feature of the performance was the magnificent scenery and elaborate furnishings. The Company appear at Napier this evening.
