December 10, 1901. Messrs D. M'Leod and C. Hughes, J’s.F., presided at the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when F. Connell was convicted on a charge of using threatening behaviour, calculated to provoke a breach of the peace, and fined £l, and coats 7s, or in default seven days’ imprisonment.— Thomas Matthews was charged under section 18 of the Gambling and Lotteries Act, with having rallied a picture for £2. Mr Westell appeared for defendant and pleaded guilty, stating that the breach of the law had • been committed through ignorance of the provisions of the Act. Defendant was fined la and costs Iss, or in default seven days' imprisonment.— The same person was further charged with being an idle and disorderly person, having no visible means of support. Mr Wostall, for the defence, contended that aoousod was well dressed at the time of arrest, and that he was possessed of a watch aud chain, upon which he could have raised money had he required it. The case was dismissed. At a meeting of the Hastings Volunteer Fire Brigade it was agreed to request the Mayor to make a claim of ,£SOO for the services rendered by the brigade and engine at the fire on board the s.s. Waimate; also to write a letter thanking the captain and officers of the boat for the hospitality shown the members of the brigade whilst working on the ship.
