The Wairoa patriotic demonstration committee met on Monday, when the convener, Mr Neill, presented a balancesheet showing a credit balance of nearly £12, which is to be devoted tp ereoting a flagstaff and purchasing a flag. They purpose also constructing an ootagonal daia around the base of the pole, which at some' future dato may be roofed in, thus forming a rotunda, Which is much, npgdpd in this little townßljip. Tbe Wairoa County Counoil Jiad rafher ' a stormy meeting at its laat sitting, and .only for the forbearance and long-suffer-ing .of the Chairman, Councillor Sinolair, it might haye resulted in a scope. The harbor works at the mouth pf the Wairoa riyer are not being carried oupso expeditiously as the Harbor Board wojctld like. The contractors have got into very hard oountry, and they may require more iron-bark piles, as the locally-grown blue fusdo&iqotaapwer,
