HASTINGS.

There was a large attendance of oitizens at Mr Dennett's auction rooma to-day for the purpose of deciding upon the beat means for celebrating the peace celebration. The Mayor presided, and having explained at length the proposals, in which he thought they would have the hearty co-operation of the Borough Counoil in granting a vote, moved, " That all the ministers in Hastings be requested to hold thanksgiving services en the night before the day of celebration" — Carried unanimously. Mr Dennett wa3 elected treasurer and Mr H. H. Hunt secretary. The following were elected as an exeoutive committee : — The Mayor, Messrs E. H. Williams, Beilby, Ellis, Newbigen, Land, O'Reilly, Maddison, and Taranaki. The Mayor intimated that a meeting of the Council had been called for Friday to reconsider their decision re money grant. It was resolved "That the Mayor, Borough Councillors and officials, friendly sooieties, Hastings Town Band, Hastings Volunteers, Hastings Mounted Rifles, Hastings Fira Brigade and Fire Police, Church Lads Brigade, cyclists, and other bodies be asked to take part in the demonstration." Mr Fraser, M.H.R., suggested "the following programme: — Morning: Procession as proposed by the Mayor, that after parading they shall rendezvous at some central place, where addresses suitable to children be given of a patriotio nature, the children subsequently to be provided with refreshments, to be followed by impromptu sports. Evening : Huge procession, with pyrotechnic display. After parading streets rendezvous at some central place, where public speakers shall address the meeting with patriotio speeches, interspersed with music, &c. It was necessary to move at once, as owing to the inaction in Hastings application had been made from Napier for the volunteers and others to be requested to join in the Napier festivities. — The following are to be asked to form the different sub-com-mittees : — Native committee, Messrs Broughton, Blake (2), Taiaroa, te Reihana, Wi Duncan, Paul Pahi, and Kupa ; procession, Messrs A. Hyde, W. B. Jones, Holt, Beecroft, Ellingham, M. Johnson, and officers of the two volunteer corps s musical committee, Messrs Wright, Chadwick, Whiteley, Fail, W. J. Jones j children's committee, Messrs Mackay, Thorp, R. Wellwood, the masters of the public Bohools, and the Rev. W. J. Comrie; finance committee, the Mayor, Messrs E. H. Williams, Thomson, Ellis, ttock, Galwey, and Mannering.— lt waa made an instruction to the committee to endeavor to arrange some permanent memorial worthy of the occasion. — Collection lists were then handed round, nearly .£4O being subscribed in the room, .£2O being paid down. — At a meeting of the executive committee held immediately after the public meeting it was decided to at ones cable for fireworks.
