USE OF GUN-COTTON.
[by telegraph.] Wellingtok, Wednesday. Last year while removing the foundation of a gun at the forts at Mahanga Bay by means of gun-cotton an explosion occurred, resulting in loss of life. The evidence was forwarded to the Woolwich authorities asking for an expression of - opinion as to whether the methods adopted in ramming the charges of guncotton were Bate. A reply has now been received stating that the method adopted at Mahanga Bay was in accordance with the text book, and that no blame waß in any way attached to the authorities. However, to avoid as far as possible • further aooident in connection with explosives, the war authorities intended to issue new regulations dealing with dry and wet gun-cotton.
