HASTINGS.

[feoh oub own correspondent.] September 1, 1899. New Zealand has every reason to be proud of the representatives she sends Home to make a name for themselves, or to obtain that higher education whioh can only be obtained in the central abodes of art. A very young lady, Miss Vera Frenoh, who left Auckland about two years since, is coming rapidly to the front in her musical profession, and bids fair to be in time an artiste of high repute as a violinist. In addition to her musioal ability she haa dramatic talent of a high degree, and has only recently been offered by Mr Musgrove a salary of .£lO per week to take the title r6le of a new play, " The Little Vagrant." Her inusio master, Herr Werner, a pupil of the great Joachim, haa refused his consent to her engagement, as it would be detrimental to her study of tho violin. As soon as her term of study is concluded — the young lady haa now paaaed her tenth year — it is her intention to return to New Zealand, and as she is a neice of Mr G. Ellis of this town, no doubt her talent will be exhibited in Hawke's Bay. One hundred and sixteen names have been added to the burgess, list of this borough, and 10 were deleted through death and removal. Messrs G. Ellia and A. L. D. Fraser will offer themselves for election aa borough councillors. Mr W. Y. Dennett also seeks re-eleotion. The other retiring councillors are Messrs Beecroft and Hughes, Mr Boilby, J.P., convicted and dismissed a first offender on a charge of drunkenness.
