[from our own correspondent,] September 1, 1899, A meeting of ratepayers for the purpose of selecting a candidate for the Borough Council elections waa held last night, the Mayor presiding. It was stated that a number of ratepayers were dissatisfied with the personnel of the Council, hence the calling of this meeting to discuss matters, which was duly done, and Mr B. H. Solomon was proposed as a desirable' candidate for the central ward, and Mr Or. Wratr, tho present councillor, was also nominated. On a vote being taken as to which was the most BuitaWe oandidate, 12 hands wore held up for Mr Wratt and three against. The Mayor declared the motion proposing Mr Solomon lost. About 40 ratepayers were present. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening. The only business was the addition and alteration of names on the burgess roll. As the result of a canvas by Messrs Drummond and M'Phee, over .£<lo has been provided already towards the second school fund. The Danevirbo S.M. Court sat to-day, Mr Turnbull, S.M., presiding. AVilliam Steel was charged with procuring liquor for a prohibited person, and fined £2 and coats. William Skillen, being a prohibited person, was charged with oausing liquor to ba procured from a licensed persou and found guilty, being fined £2 and costs. M. Tansey, for a breach of the Babbit Act, was fined £2 and costs. In the following civil cases judgment wont for plaintiffs :— A. W. Coliett v. D. Munro, .£l6 9s and costs ; D. Hannon v. K Havil, judgment summons, M Is, order made for payment at the rate of £1 per month, or a week in Napier gaol. A maintenance order was granted Eliza James for 6b per week against D. Templeton. In consequence of the non-appearance of the prinoipal witness, the case Police v. R. Roake, alleged breach of the Auctioneers' Act, was adjourned until October 6th. The Waipawa licensing committee met to-day. Transfers of licenses were granted as follows :— -Exchange Hotel, Waipawa, from Thomas Ireland to Chas. Vesty ; Onga Onga Hotel, from Ohas. Vesty to Geo. Staunton.
