WIFE MURDERER GETS TEN YEARS.

Auckland, Friday. At the Supreme Court to-day William Carroll, late licensee of the Masonic Hotel, Cambridge, was charged with the murder .of his wife, Elizabeth Carroll. The evidence showed the latter was under the influence of drink j that they lived unhappily in drink and out of drink. Medical evidence revealed shocking injuries on the body, and in addition three ribs were found broken at the post mortem. Mr Cooper, for the defence, called no witnesses. He said Carroll had no intention to kill his wife, and no malice was shown. The charge, therefore, ought to be reduced to manslaughter. No new facts were disclosed at the trial, A verdict of manslaughter was returned, and prisoner was sentenced to 10 yearß* imprisonment. Dunedin, Friday. At the Supreme Court to-day Frank Reid Curtis, charged with inducing a young woman and a young man to enter into partnership with him, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment on each of the two ofiarges, the sentences to be concurrent. William and Hugh Findlay, found guilty previously of housebreaking, was sentenced to three years, and Henry Weidner, for indecent assault on a child, to three years.
