PETTY PROSECUTIONS

[by telegraph.] Invebcabgill, Friday. A hard case was dealt with to-day, Martin, a coal dealer, being fined Is and costs £2 Os Gd because his carter loitered on the road with a load of coal and delivered it ten minutes after the closing hour on a half-holiday. Tho carter had since been discharged, and admitted he could have travelled faster. It appeared that Martin had previously reported Inspector M'Keon to the department. The latter alleged that the dray left the yards after 1 o'clock, but Martin contended that was not so, and further alleged that a rival dealer's dray went out with a load at the same time, which the inspector failed to see, although he admitted he was watching. In another case a bushman was fined in all £2 for delivering a load of wood after 1 o'clock, his excuse being that the bush roads being soft he had to make two journeys of the load to a hard road, hence the excess of time.
