CONCILIATION BOARD
ARE GOVERNMENT BODIES SUIi.TECT TO THE ACT? fBY TET.TSnRArH.] Wellington, Monday. The Board of Conciliation Bat to-day to consider a dispute in the painting trade. Present — Rev. A. 11. Collins (chairman), Messrs J. M. Shera, J. J. Holland, J. Fawcus, and W. Lucas. * Mr James Regan; on behalf of the Painters' Union, stated the number of employers had not been cited on the first occasion, and some had started in business since the award was made. A letter was read from the Board of Education, stating they were advised by their solicitors that in view of the express terms of the Act the proviaions did not apply to the Board, being practically a ! body distributing money voted by the Legislature for educational purposes. Mr Began contended that not even the Government bodies should be left out of the operations of the Act. As a matter of fairness all should be brought into 1 line. Mr Shera said the Board was not a Government department in the fullest sense. Mr Holland said the Education Board was a corporate body, and employed workmen, therefore it should be brought into line with other employers of labor. The Board then went into committee to consider the position, and upon resuming the Chairman announced that there had been an informality in the proceedings on the part of the Union, as a reso- , lution authorising proceedings to be taken had not been passed before the proceedings were actually instituted, con- ' sequently a fresh start would be required. ■ In the meantime the Board would ascnr- , tain the true position of the Board of . Education in the matter.
