Present — Messrs GHbcrd (in the chair), Worboys, Hebden, Barrett, Grinlinton, South, Black, and Murphy.

Tbo chairman and Mr Murphy were only present dnrlng the latter parti of the meeting.

CORRESPONDENCE.

From Mrs Begg, secretary W.C.T.U,, inquiring if Dr. Richardson's temperance lesson books were used in the school, and if so, in what standards, and how often in each week they were read.— A reply had been sent stating that the schools were supplied with the work in question, but that it was not in regular use.— Mr Worboys thought that it was desirable tbat the book should be in more regular use, and It was decided to ask tbe headmaster to arrange for a lesson to be given from it at least nnco a week. — Messrs Grinlinton and Barrett agreed. — An amendment proposed by Mr Black end supported by Mr Hebden that the headmaster ba first consnlted was lost.

From the Education Board intimating that the midwinter vacation would corn* mence on Friday, 21st June, and terminate on Saturday, July 6oh, and that the pupil teachers' examination would commence an Tuesday, June 25 tb. Id reference to the trneot officer's application for payment, the Board had decided to defer the question of remuneration until the end of the year find then make a grant to those truant officers who had efficiently done their work. — Received. From same, declining to supply the Kindergarten apparatus, bnt stating that the clock applied ior should be purchased by tbe committee. — It wan decided to make a fresh application for the clock, as the committee considered that it was the Board's place to properly furnish tbe new room at the side school. From same, stating that Mr Fltcalthly's resignation had been accepted, and that the application for deaka for the lafants' department had been referred to the Inspector,—Keceivedr From the Town Clerk, intimating that the Borough Council could not put down a wooden pavement as requested, neither conld they prevent boys from playing football on the square. —Received. AN INTERESTING CIRCULAR. The Timaru Board wrote forwarding tbe following copy of resolutions passed at the conference of school committees of South Cantarbury :— (1,) That one improved sot ot school books should be iißod throughout tnff -colony, changes only to bo made at intorvafinif not less than three years, and that Education Boards supply books at cost price. (2.) That it is advisable in tho interest ot education thatinspectorsshouldbo appointed by and be under the control of tho Government, and not as at presont bo tho servants ot the Boards, and that they Bhould bo stationed not more- than throe years in one place (3.) That in tho appointment o£ teachers greater weight should do given to tho recommendation oJt committees, and that no teacher (pupil teaohfT oxcepted) who hasbeenless than 12 months in a school should bo eligible for a vacancy. (4.) That nil teachers should havo tho samo weight and consideration given to thoir application for appoinments, no matter in what part of the colony they may livo. (5.) That tho number of pupil teachers s oxcessivo. and likely to provo a Borious incutone in the near future. That schools should be more centralised than they aro at present, by refusing to open any moro sohools within a radius four miles. A discussion took place, and resolutions were passed approving of clause 1, dls agreeing with the first 1 portion ot clause 2; approving of clauses 3 and 4. In relation to clans* 5 no opinion was expressed, aud clause 6 was considered to be efficiently dealt with by the Act. A reply embodying this information was ordered to be forwarded to Timaru. REPORTS, The visiting committee reported everything satisfactory in the school, and suggested that the swings be removed from the school yards, and that) a room in the caretaker's house be repapered, and that the new caretaker was performing his dnties in a satisfactory manner.— Adopted. The bead master reported that the number on the roll at the end of the month wta 1(049, and the average attendance 869, or 40 balow last quarter. He advised that a truant officer be appointed in tbe place of Consbable Kutlcdge, who had gone away. Tbe sum of £12 63 3d, stationery fees, had been deposited at the bauk to the committee's orSnt. — It was decided to communicate with tbe Police Department requesting that a new truant officer be appointed. Miss Gouldlng reported a total average .attendance of 214-24, highest attendance 234, roll number 277.— Received, A report was received from the liquidators of the penny savings bank stating that of deposits amonnting to £55 Is 6d, £53 2s 2d had been withdrawn, leaving £1 19) 4d yet unclaimed. It was decided to grant a b"nns of £2 2i to tbe secretary for services rendered in connection with the liquidation. Accounts amounting to £7 18a Id ware passed for payment. Messrs Hebden and Griniinton were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month The meeting adjourned till 7 o'clock on Monday next, when a special meeting will be held to select a firat assistant master.
