(I'Ett UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION) Auckland, Tuesday. Inspector Sherwin took over the charge of tlic Auckland police district yesterday. Inspector Thomson left for Wellington to-day. A seven-roomed house at Mount Roskillroad, owned and occupied by Mr Worrall, farmer, was bilrned dj>wn last night. The building was insdred for' £300, and the furniture for £130, both in the New Zealand office. This morning a fire took place in the fancy goods shop of Mr T. S. Jones, Queen-street. The stock was destroyed. It was insured for £500 « in the Colonial office. The fire was confined to Jones' shop, which was a portion of a brick block. The origin of (lie fire is unknown. The directors of the Moanataiari Gold Mining Company have received a cable- , grain from London containing an offer } made by a London syndicate of £100,000 \ cash for the Moanataiari mine. It is stated that the directors have not accepted the offer, but have authorised their agent to submit the property at a higher figure. A caveat was recently lodged in the Supreme Court against the will of Bishop, who was lately shot in San Francisco, the objection being raised by Mrs Bishop. Mr Napier moved to-day that probate be granted and the caveat be set aside. The hearing of the motion was adjourned till Friday. Francis, the captain of the Canterbury team, has allotted the positions to his men for to-morrow's match. Despite the result of the Wellington match he resolved not to play wing forwards. The teani differs in two men only from that which met Wellington, Vorlesso having taken Hiddlestone's place, and Donnelly that of Hclmore. Von Haast returned South to-day in consequence of the 'death of his father. The weather promises to be fine for the match.

Sir George Whitmore, Commandant of the New Zealand forces, accompanied by Colonel Bailey, President of the Military Council of Education, and Captain Coleman, of tha_ Permanent Militia, paid a visit to H.M.S. '( Opal this morning. In honor of the " Major-General a salute of eight guns was fired.

Chkistchurch, Tuesday. Sir Julius Von Haast died suddenly early this morning. Ho was apparently well yesterday, and went in the evening to a lecture of the Philosophical Institute, where he complained of feeling ill. He went home and lo "bed. The doctor prescribed for him, and he apparently went to sleep. About half-past one Lady Von Haast noticed him breathing heavily, and sent for Dr. Symes*', but when he camo Sir Julius was dead. He was 63 years old.

At tlm inquest this evening on tha body of Frederick George Thomas Sibari, waiter at tlie Koyal Hotel, who shot himself last night, a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was returned. The deceased left a letter addressed to the licensee and manager of the hotel, stating 'that he intended to kill himself on account of a love affair with two women. It appears that two years ago lie received a severe injury to his head in Wellington through the balance weight of a lift falling on him, and that ho attempted suicide some time ago.. Mr James Macfarlane, of Achray, Amiiri, is out for Cheviot against Mr Lance.

Gkeyjioutic, Tuesday. Some hares recently let loose at the Haupiri have now become established. An attempt to transfer some Severn trout two to five inches long from the Little Grey to the hrooks of the Upper Ahaura failed. A Wily with the fish in it was left in the creek one night, it being too late to get to the destination, and in the morning all were dead, though the billey and its lid were well perforated with holes. It is thought possible that they may have been poisoned by the water having flowed through swampy ground.

Timaeu, Tuesday. At the Supreme Court to-day Kicliard Makepiece Eversleigh, convicted of jarceny, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment. He made a very stubborn defence, generally denying everything. Mr Swanu, gaoler, swore to the prisoner's identity with the man formerly in Wellington gaol under the name of Korney. The prisoner absolutely denied this, and the_ judge characterised the prisoner's tactics as audacious.

DUXEDIN, Tuesday.- -I Mr James Speight, the well-known brewer, died to-day. The Otago team of footballers left this afternoon by the Hawea. The team will reach Nelson on Friday, where they play their first match.

Several changes in business circles are reported. Two Melbourne capitalists have purchased the business of Keast and M'Carthy (brewers), .while K.- Hudson and Co. and K. K. Murray and Co., biscuit and chocolate manufacturers, are arranging terms for amalgamation. The Dnncdin Chess and Draughts Club have arranged to play a telegraphic chess match with Invercar<<ill on Saturday. Intelligence has been received that Messrs \V. A, Fleming and William Aclan, Otago medical students, have passed the final professional examination at the Edinburgh University, and have each taken a degree.

Invercakoill, Tuesday. The Supreme Court sittings were opened to-day before Mr Justice Williams. The criminal calendar is a very light one, there being only three prisoners, all charged with iorgety, four charges of forgery and two of embezzlement bein«jf preferred against J. B. Lea, late Town Clerk of Winton.- In his charge to the Grand Jury, the Judge referred to the ease in which a man named Henry Coster altered a cheque for £2 given hint by his brother to £3, and said it was a trilling case, and it was almost a pity that there was not some provision enabling the Magistrate to deal with such cases summarily and so avoid the expense of bringing them into the Supreme Court, The Grand Jury found no oill in the case in question. J. K. Lea, late Town Clerk of Winton, pleaded guilty to charges of forgery and embezzlement, and was sentenced to three years' imprisonment. An application to have him released under the Probation Act was refused, the Judge pointing out tUat tho prisoner had beeu trading on a good name, and that the offences extended over a series of years. The defalcations, so fur as known, are £9SB. J. H. Wilson, now undergoing' two years' imprisonment in Dnnedin gaol tor forgery, pleaded guilty to two charges of the same nature, but urged that the ciinio was the result of drunkenness, and had really been committed at the same time as the others. He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment, to be concurrent with the present sentence, so that practically he only gets an additional one month's imprisonment.
