WANGANUI STEEPLECHASE MEETING.

[BY TELEGRAPH. J Wanganui, Wednesday. The Wanganui annual steeplechase meeting took place on the racecourse today and was fairly successful. The attendance of the public was scarcely solarge as last year, though the stand and lawn were well patronised. The totalisator was well patronised, £1100 being put through. The principal event was a great surprise, as Alaric, the winner, was supposed, not to have a show. He was bought as a hack three months ago for £20. Accidents were numerous, the most serious being that which befell Edwards, the rider of To Whetu. He was, however, able to get about after a short time. The following are the events : — WANGANUI HANDICAP STEEPLECHASE, Of 225 soys ; second horse tb receive 25 soys out of the stakes, third horse to save his stakes ; over the Wanganui Steeplechase course ; distance, about 3 miles. Rae's Grey Momus, lOst 121 b (Owner) 3 — Lone Hand, Baron, Te Whetu, Catch'em, Chandler, Sunray, and Skylark also ran. Alaric and New Year made the running from the fall of the flag, and jumping splendidly had the race all to themselves, the former winning by ten lengths. Te Whetu fell when going well about one mile from home. Lonehand and Catch'em refused at the stone wall and were taken back to the paddock. The Baron finished nowhere. Time for 3 miles, 6min 46isecs. MAIDEN STEEPLECHASE, Of 100 soys ; second horse to save his stakes ; distance, 2_ miles ; over such course as the committee may appoint ; weight for age. (Heaton) ... 2 — Te Whetu, Lone Hand, and Grey Momus also ran. Lone Hand baulked at the stone wall, and caused Grey Momus and Te Whetu to stop also, and neither of the trio got any further. CONSOLATION HANDICAP STEEPLECHASE, Of 40 soys; second horse to save his stakes ; distance about 1^ miles. New Year, lOst 131 b (Potts) 1 Chandler, list (Watt) 2 Lone Hand, 12st 71b (M'Coy) ... 3 Lone Hand was the favorite, and took his jumps in good style, but the weight told on him, and although ridden right out he could only finish a bad third, Grey Momus fourth.
