FIGEON MATCHES AT PETANE.

The pigeon-matches got up by Mr _ Villers at Petane attracted a large number of spectators, who thoroughly enjoyed ithe day's sport. Mr Villers provided an excellent lunch, and had made the best ■ \ arrangemerits possible for the comfort of his visitors. Unfortunately there was no shooting at the fiogardus giass balls, which had been looked forward to with a good deal of interest. The trap was to have been forwarded from Auckland by the Albion, but she brought no cargo for Napier. It was th«n put on bjard the Southern Cross, which was timed to arrive yesterday morning, but she had so much cargo for Gisborne that she cannot arrive until to-day. However, Mr Villers iB arranging for matches on Saturday week, at which the trap and balls will be used. . There were, however, plenty of birds on the ground, and an extra handicap wss consequently arranged. Mr Sligo, who shot splendidly, won the first two events. The other fell to Mr Pine.
