LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

The Editor does not hold himself responsible for opinions expressed by correspondents. Sib, — In his opening charge to the Grand Jury, at the recent sittings of the Supreme Court, at Napier; his- Honor Mrv Justice Johnston is reported in your journal as having said, in referring to the case of indecent assault, Baker :v. Tupper — "Even if the woman's story is to be believed, she seems to be one whq could give and take ; she. made complaint, not to her husband, but to another man, in a manner which shows her not to be very particular as to the language she uses. ' .Now, sir, perhaps you will kindly allow me space to say that had the Grand Jury , brought in a true bill in the case under ... notice, his Honor would have found reason to modify his opinion of me. There are several ladies and gentlemen in this province from whom I could have obtained letters testifying to my respectability ; and they, at least, will know that what the Judge thought fit to remark, about me is not all Gospel; As to my not complaining to my husband before any one else, I may remark that_ Mr. TBaker, on the day of the assault, was some 14 or 15 miles distant ; and I did not think it advisable to wait till he should return. -—Hoping-ybuTwilToblige me by inserting the foregoing in your next issue,— l am, &C, ■ ■; The Sttffeeeb. Napier, May 16, 1870.
