THINGS POLITICAL.
The ministry have carried their defence resolutions, and may now be considered as firmly settled in their new position. The opposition has "melted into thin air," and the ministerial programme will be carried out in its integrity. The effect, on this coast, at least),i is most salutary. Whether the Stafford government was ever in earnest in its efforts to suppress rebellion, is only known to themselves ; but, here, the universal feeling was that they were taking the shortest course to reduce Hawke's Bay to the level of the Wanganui district. What a relief it was when they were ejected from office ! How much more since the prospects of their return have become "small by degrees and beautifully less." The change has already had a surprising effect. Capital begins to peer, forth, and the inherent energy of our settlers is beginning again to exhibit itself, All that is wanted is public confidence, and that we have not had for many a day. When that is felt-— and it is beginning to be felt already— the province will once more go ahead, a participant in the general prosperity of the Colony.
