tfiIIENDS IN ENGLAND. At a time when the Colony is at its lowest ebb — when so many, seeing it down, think the opportunity a favorable one for giving it a kick — it is most gratifying to see brave men, undismayed by the torrent of official opinion, stand forward valiantly in its defence. , A memorable example of this— or, •/ather, two memorable examples — are before us. One of these is the protest of several distinguished colonists, including Sir George Grey, against the sentiments expressed in Earl Granville's despatch, in which he intimated the refusal of his Government to recommend a loan to New Zealand, The text of that protest has been kindly sent us by a correspondent, and is reprinted in to-day's Herald. It ia a document which conveys forcible meaning in every word; and the colony lias reason to rejoice that its traducers have no longer the field wholly to themselves. The second example is, that of a writer in the Stai^rd newspaper. His article (which we also reproduce) is a vigorous exposition of the case of the colonists, and must be successful, we think, in opening the eyes of the people of England to the very serious state of things their rulers seem bent upon precipitating. But, in trufth, we bogin to find that the English Government is not altogether to blame in this matter. The late ministry j xcexn to, have been most assiduous in acts of irritation towards the Home authorities. A totally different tone and policy have been inaugurated by the present ministry —with, we hope, and indeed feel assured, the very best results.
