NEWS FROM THE FRONT.

The following "semi-official" information has been placed at our disposal by the acting agent for the General Government : — Despatches from Fort Galatea on the Rangataiki river, dated May 11, were received in Napier on Saturday forenoon, The communications between Fort Galatea and Ahikereru, a distance of 22 miles, were all right. Colonel Whitmore, after leaving a strong garrison in Ahikereru pa, had advanced on Ruatabuna with about 350 men, His advanced guard of 20 men had had s skirmish with the rebels, losing one native killed and two Europeans wounded. The weather was very fine for the season ; no snow, and but little rain; rivers low, There were plenty of supplies at Fort Galatea. Capt. Moorsom's men were employed in packing provisions and ammunition to Ahikereru. There is good feed foi the horses around Fort Galatea, which is strongly situated and garrisoned by about 60 men. This place could be rushed only from one side, and it is defended by ditches, banks, and manuka fences. Despatches dated 12th and 15th, May have been received from Major Herrickj whose camp was then eight miles of Lake Waikaremoana. His movements had been retarded by the continual refusal/ of the Ngatiporou and other friendly natives to proceed to the front, on account, as they say, of the cold. The hon. Mr. Richmond arrived at Wairoa on Satnrday, and succeeded in inducing them to go on. They were accordingly to make a start yesterday towards Waikaremoana. The available force under Major Herrick will then amount to 250 men, The St. Kilda is expected back to day to embark about 30 constabulary and stores (including the cylindrical tubes for the pontoon punts) for Wairoa. The Government agent in Auckland had received a telegram from Mr, Searancke, dated 12th May, informing him that the King, Rewi, and Tamati Ngapori, with their people, had resolved to go to Ngaruawahia to meet the Prince. Fifty pioneers had arrived at Alexandra to erect houses and make preparations for the occasion.
