PUBLIC MEETING AT MEANEE.

A public meeting, having reference to the same subject— that of,' the proposed Tollgate—was held last evening iv the Meanee Hotel. About 40 persons -were present. Mr. Maney was voted into the chair. He briefly opened the proceedings, and then, read the following letter from the members for the district : — Council Chamter, October 7, 18G7. The members for the Napier Country District beg to apprise the Chairman of the Publio Meeting at Meanee in regard to tolls, that it would not serve the purpose for which the meeting is called, were they to attend ; and that aa they intend strictly to fulfil their pledge to oppose a Toll-gate, no inconvenience they conceive, can arise from their absence. After the subject had been talked over — there being but one opinion among those present— it was moved by Mr. Heslop, seconded by Mr. Badley, and carried unanimously-': — " That this meeting is of opinion that' the members of the rf apier Country District should- oppose the pas-

- . , " A sing of the Toll-gate Bill— the settlers of the district considering that it would bear most unfairly upon them as a community, and would, in their opinion, be the worst form of taxation." It was then moved by Mr. Powdrell, ■ seconded by Mr. Heslop, and carried unanimously :— " That this meeting is of opinion that it is desirable, while opposing _.. the Toll-gate Bill, to petition for the High-" ways Act." •-; - -\ In course of the discussion that took place, the question of putting a small' steamer on the river, in the event of the Toll-gate Bill being passed, was one of those touched upon — several settlers expressing their willingness to take shares.
