LOSS OF THE BRIG VENUS. CAPTAIN W. KEAN.

We regret to learn the loss of this fine brig, belonging to this port. She was on her return voyage from China and Batavia to Auokland, with a valuable oargo of tea and Chinese goods, and sugars and Eastern produce from Java. She is reported a total loss in Sapodie Straits — orew saved. In the absence of further information as to the state of the vessel, we may mention that she was a fine staunoh British-built brig, and commanded by one of the most careful captains hailing from this port— one who, from his first appearance amongst us in the Fayaway, some twelve or thirteen years ago, has always been held in high respect. Sapodie Straits lie to the north-east of Madura; ,and Captain Eean had evidently been shaping iffs course for the Straits of Bally, or Lombock. The insurances,; we understand, on ship and oargo are heavy, but chiefly held in foreign offices. Our local insurance oompanies are comparatively free. But the loss of so valuable a cargo to the port must be very considerable,— Daily Sovithsrn, Cross, 28rd February.
