THE WRECK OF THE STAR OF THE EVENING.

The Wellington correspondent of the Otago \

Daily Times thus writes, under date the 4th in.*!. : — " Caj'hiiu Johnson, Nautical Assessor, and Mi*. Crawford, 11.M., eat yesterday as a Board of Enquiry into the wreok of the Star of the Evening. It seems strange that suoh a lamentable accident should have occurred with nobody to blame. Deviation of the compass is given in evidence as the cause. The evidence is in this morning's paper, but the decision is reserved." The same writer saya :— " The wreck of the Star of the Evening is fully reported in the papers herewith. One case of sad distress in connection with it is now addressing itself to the charitable. The steward, named Blthara, who was drowned, had been out of work some time ; and hia wife and six children living here were so reduced, that only the day before the news reached us, every article of furniture had been sold under a distress warrant. Calamities seldom come alone, and this double calamity has induced a subscription in the poor widow's behalf."
