ARRIVAL OF THE BEAUTIFUL STAR.

The s.s, Beautiful Star, Captain Morwick, is now owned by a Dunedin firm, and has come up to take the place of the Star of the Evening in the stock trade. Wo gladly welcome Capt. Morwick and his handy vessel back to our port, and trust he will receive adequate encouragement to continue in the trade. Captain Morwick reports that, on Sunday last, a very heavy easterly sea set in at Otago ; it broke right across the- bar, which has 17ft. upon it at low water. The Beautiful Star left Dunedin on the night of Monday last, at 8 o'clock, and had calm weather and light S.E, breeze till off Banks' Peninsula, which was passed at 3 next morning. Thence to Cape Palliser, at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, had moderate S.E. winds with cloudy weather. It then blew a strong gale from south, with heavy squalls and rain, and high cross sea. At 9 p.m. on Wednesday, off Bare Island, hove to till morning, the ship rolling terrifically during the night. At daylight stood in for the land, and made Bare Island at 8 a.m. Ran round Cape Kidnappers ; at noon was off Napier, and steamed at onoe into tho Iron Pot. The Beautiful' Star is taken up fov a cargo of sheep to the Bay of Islands — a new market, apparently, for our stockowners. She is being fitted up for stock, and will probably not get away before Wednesday next. ARRIVAL OE THE LORD ASHLEY. The Lord Ashley arrived yesterday at \ past 3 p.m., and steamed south in course of the evening, carrying the English mail via Suez. She left Auckland on Tuesday the 12th inst, at 10 p.m., and arrived at Tauranga on the 13th, at 3 p.m., having experienced a strong southerly gale, Remained at Tauranga till 6 a.m., on Thursday the 14th, and had fine weather across the Bay of Plenty. After rounding East Cape experienced head wind, with a terrific south-easterly sea, which cou-» tiuued until past Portland Island. Nothing was seen of the Star of tho South, but it was dusk when the Asbley passed Hicks' Bay, where Captain Bendall had probably run for Bhelter.
