STOLE CASH AND HIRED ’PLANE

BOY’S AMAZING EXPLOITS. TWICE DESERTED FROM SHIPS.LONDON, July 16. A- boy of 17; of whom it was said that among other exploits, he stole £3O from his mother, a schoolmistress, hired an aeroplane and flew from, London to Mansion, Kent, later being found, penniless at Gravesend, in the dock at the North London Police Court. ... He pleaded guilty to stealing a motor car, which he drove 1500 miles,, and asked the Magistrate to take four other oases of theft into consideration. The boy was Richard James Vey, of the School Houses, Copford, Essex. It was stated that fiis father died | when he was a year old. His career from April, 1932, was described by the police as follows : . Drew money from the bank, left home, was found at Tilbury. In May, 1933, the aeroplane exploit. October, 1933, questioned by the police about a. fire at Conford—and vanished. Took with him £2O belonging to his mother, hired a ear and knocked down a policeman in Whitechapel. Was chased by police car and stopped. November, 1933, went to sea as a Wireless apprentice. Deserted in America and returned to England. Repeated this exploit in all details in June, 1934. February, 1935, found work as chauffeur, stole £3, bound over. March, 1935, found work as an errand hoy; embezzled £2 10s. absconded. Same night broke into garage and stole car. Arrested at Gloucester .Tune 29. He was remanded for a report as to his suitability for Borstal.
