Something New From Old

The monthly meeting of the Tawhiti Women’s Institute was held in t)ie Tawhiti Hail on Friday, when Mrs Paterson (vice-president) occupied the chair. Mrs McGlade (president) was unable to preside through indisposition. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Burney and Mrs S. Barkia in their illnesses. Arrangements were made for a girt afternoon for Mrs H. a member of the Institute who was married recently. Members decided to take part in tlie potato growing competition. A sum of 10's was sent from this Institute for the Cancer Research Fund. A special effort is to be made this month for federation funds. Aftei'noon tea was arranged by the hostesses Miss Larcom, Mesdames Moore and Muir, who also decorated the hall and the tea tables. A competition, “Something New from Something Old,” drew a great variety of entries and the judge, Mrs W. Young (Hawera), awarded Miss Jean Easton Ist, with a cushion made from old felt hats ; Mrs Johnston 2nd, with a; teddy bear made from an old coat; and Mrs Dowden 3rd with a girl’s dress made from a lady’s discarded dress. An “exchange” stall, supervised by Mrs Paterson and helpers, did good business.

The art and crafts section of the_ Institute meets every Tuesday fortnight and the members, under Mrs Adams as convener, are taking a great interest in the making of pewter and brass articles.
