Birthday Celebrations
Organised by the .Hunter Road branch of the W.D.F.U. an afternoon social was held in the Hunter Road Hall on Tuesday. A “500” tournament was held, the winning table being Mesdames Bloor, Cleaver and Carlson. Consolation prizes went to Mesdames McLaren, Brisco jand Swindlehurst.
Later, afternoon tea was served and the birthday cake was cut by the president (Mrs W. E. Carter), who, in her speech, thanked visitors of other branches for their attendance. On behalf of those present, Mrs J. Cocker, president of the .Eltham branch, thanked the Hunter Road branch for the enjoyable afternoon, and also wished them many happy 7 returns of the day.
Visitors were present from Eltham, Lowgarth and Hawera and from the Te Roti Women’s Institute. A competition for a cushion donated by Mrs McLaren was won by Mrs Grierson (Te Roti). On Tuesday evening a euchre party and dance was held in the Hunter Road Hall. There was a fair attendance. Prizes for cards were won by Miss O. Simpson first, Mrs Riley second, after a play-off with Miss R. Startup; Mr H. Startup first, Mr S Bloor second, after a- play-off with Messrs Rowlands and R. Carter. A consolation prize ivent to Mrs Anderson. After the supper interval dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Miss W. Startup and Mr L. Carter.
