Ohangai School Concert
Children Entertain Parents
Despite inclement weather, the Ohangai Hall was crowded on Wednesday evening when the Ohangai School held a very successful concert and dance in aid of school funds. A varied programme was presented and all the items proved very popular, the children performing to the credit of their teachers, Miss V.. Shieb and Miss E. Shand, and their own ability. Following the national anthem all the children sang “Three Merry Travellers” and “Pirates’ Song” under the conductorship of 'Mr G. McConnell. Other items in the order of their presentation were as jfollow: Viola Townsend, pianoforte solo; Kevin Kerrisk, recitations, “Father’s Sunday Morning” and “A Boy’s Sorrows” ; junior pupils, folk dance; senior pupils, song, “Green Grow the Rushes Oh!”; duet, Kathleen Kerrisk and Ronnie Elmes, “Dwarf and Giant” ; pakeha girls, Lena Trilford, Kathleen Kerrisk, Viola Townsend, Avery Lander, Barbara Robertson, Phillis Tidswell, J. Vincent, Eileer. and Joyce Hamilton, short poi to percussion rhythm by a “dish band” conducted by Emma Hinga and Tewai Tamaka; junior children, songs, “The Little Brown Hen” and “In Bunny Land”; Avery Lander, recitation, “Little Orphan Annie” ; pianoforte solo, .Barbara Robertson; senior pupils, one-act play, “Friday Afternoon Compositions,” Sam Kafteno (teacher), Joyce Hamilton, Viola Townsend, Audrey Sewell, Mary Katene, Colin Kerrisk, Teddy Slater, Eric Meuli, Terry Tutajwa (pupils); pianoforte solo, Kathleen Kerrisk; recitation, ‘The Glory of the Garden” ; haka, Maori children, Emma Hinga, Mary Katene, Tewai Tamaka, Joyce Tutawa, Sam Katene, Johnny Hinga, Terry Tutawa, Johnny Tamarapha, Paymen Tumoroa, Charlie Tamarapha; piano solo, Colin Kerrisk; recitation, Ronnie Elmes, “A Boy I Know”'; Avery Lander, dressed as a Victorian lady in a frock of primrose sprigged organdie, and Teddy Slater sang the duet, “Will You Marry Me”; lyric verse, senior girls; recitation, “The Coward,” Charlie Tamarapha; Maori choir, consisting of Emma Hinga, Te■wai Tamaka, Mary and Polly Katene. Joyce Tutawa. Sam Katene,, Johnny Hinga, Terry Tutawa, Paymen Tumoroa," Johnny Tamarapha, Toby Rangitonga, Charlie Tamarapha, sang two songs conducted by S. Penny; play, “A Story Without Words,” by Ronnie Elmes, Alex Cook, Eric Meuli, Sam Katene, Terry Tutawa, John Tamarapha. > . r Mr G. Kerrisk, jun., chairman or the school committee, thanked the children on behalf of the audience for their concert, and the children in return extended thanks to their teachers and Messrs McConnell, Tamarapha and Penny. . • Community singing was conducted by Mr D. Wills (Hawera) and many old and popular songs were sung. bL* Wills also gave a sketch, “The Girl Who Wouldn’t.” Supper was served by Mesdames Kerrisk, jun., Townsend, Trilford, Dyson, Robertson and Misses I. O Shea and M. Dyson. . Dancing was enjoyed to music played by' Messrs S. and G. Kerrisk, a children’s Monte Carlo wa?tz being won by Polly Katene and Charlie Tamarapha and Lynsey Robertson and Brian Tidswell. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss F. Trilford and Mr M Kitney. ________
