Fifth Birthday

The annual birthday party is always a most important function at the Hawera AVomen’-s Club and judging by the -large attendance on Tuesday night it seemed even more so than usual. Iti is now' five years since the inception of the club and during that time it has flourished and fulfilled a social need besides assisting in welfare work in the town. For this occasion there was a gorgeous array of flowers, the large reception rooms being tastefully decorated with mimosa and pastel pink and deep rose camellias, yvith tradings of lycopodium setting the blooms off to perfection. A new and novel idea was added by small coloured lights hung from the architrave between the two'rooms. A varied programme, arranged for the entertainment of the guests, included the following items. Selections by Mrs Fy son’s orchestra, the personnel of the orchestra being Mrs Fvson, Mrs Giblin, Mrs Giaham and Miss Pinson; two vocal duets by Mrs W. AY. Gibson and Miss AI. Adamson; verse speaking by Miss Knight’s choir, “Cargoes,” and, as a parody. “Passengers”; verse speaking duo to the tune of a whistling thrush, bv Mi's B- C. Bennett and Miss D. Bryant, “The Throstle” and, as an encore, “The Eavesdroppers”; voca number, “Down in the Foiest ant encore by Miss P. Ekdahl;. humorous cherade composed by Miss D. Lon 1gan, the word being “tirade, those taking part Mesdames A. Evans, L. A. Ablett, S. A- Chisholm A J. Loiii-o-an, H. G. AVhitehead, S. R. A eitch, Misses M. Strange. Knight and Al. Thomson. A jolly dance was given by members of the folk-dancing ,e ass ' The vice-president, who, m the absence of the president, Airs 0 Callaghan, supervised the presentation, ieceived the guests in a becoming gown of deep navy floral georgette. On cutting the cake, Aims Caplen spoke briefly and the guests drank to the health of the chib.
