Social at Te Kiri

A social organised by the Te Kiri Basketball Club to further the candidature of Princess Hazel, a club member. was held on Monday evening, and proved most enjoyable. A novelty dance was won by Miss A. G. McLellan and Mr \V. Coxhead. Miss G. Beore contributed a recitation and Miss Y\ Becre a pianoforte solo. Music for dancing was supplied by Mrs L. Beore and Mr W. Phelps and extras by Misses G. Tynan and H. Thomas and Mr IV. Coxhead. Mr J. Bolt was master of ceremonies. Waverley Farewell Before the departure of Mr and Mrs Berridge for their new home in Taibape many of their friends gathered at the borne of Mr- and Mrs Strauchon to bid them farewell. A very jolly evening was spent in card-playing, interspersed with vocal items by Mi’s Graves, Messrs Crawford' and Jones. Before supper Mr Strauchon, on beliftlf of those present, asked Mr and Mrs Berridge to accept the gift of a beautiful crystal jug, and expressed icgret at their departure, but wished them every success and happiness in their future. Mr Berridge, in reply, thanked Mr Strauchon for his kind remarks and all for their gift and good wishes. He also introduced his successor, Mr Shepherd. who he hoped would find Waverley people as congenial as he had done.

Kakaramea Personals

Messrs James and Lindsay Huston, of Kakaramea, are spending a holiday in the Auckland district. Mrs J. T. Dwyer, with her two HTnall children, is holidaying in the South Island. Mrs J. Bourke, of Kakaramea, is visiting Hawera as the guest of Mr and Airs Quin. Mrs K. Carmichael, of Kakaramea, is an inmat.o of the New Plymouth hospital. Miss Inez Hardaker visited her parents during the week-end. Mr J. Bourne and the Misses Bourne, of Waverley, were visitors to Kakaramea on Sunday. Mr Palmer was a visitor to Wanganui on Tuesday night for the R.S.A. reunion. Mr George Matthews, formerly of Kakaramea, was a visitor during the week-end. He left on Monday for Cambridge. Mr S. Lord and Mr T. Wilson are visiting Wellington. Miss P. Ward, of Hawera, was a visitor to Kakaramea on Sunday. Auroa Farewell Although the weather was unfavourable there was a large attendance at a meeting held in the Auroa Hall to make arrangements for a suitable j farewell to Mr and Mrs H. R. Wood, who are leaving the district. Air Buxton presided.

It was decided that the farewell take the form of a social, interspersed with musical items. Doorkeepers will be Messrs Y. Slieerin, T. Blair and A. W. King; masters of ceremonies, Messrs F. Hughes and J. Freyne; speakers, Farmers’ Union, Air King; hall committee, Air Buxton; school committee, Air Duff; school, Ah* Fairbrother; social and musical, Airs Benton. Canvassers also were appointed.

Queen Carnival

The final entertainment in aid of the Te Kiri candidate in the Queen of the West carnival took place on Tuesday evening in the form of a gift social. There was a gapd attendance, visitors being present from Makaka and Awatuna. Alesdames Lind. Alty and Walslie wore in charge of the stall and the articles unsold were auctioned by Mr Geo. Thomas. ALusic for dancing was again supplied by Aliss A. Collins, and Air W. Walslie, on behalf of the carnival committee, thanked Aliss Collins and presented her with a tin of chocolates as a mark of appreciation for her generous help at so many functions. The Rev. A. J. Farnell thanked all the workers and others who had helped so generously and congratulated Te Kiri on keeping to the top of the poll. A Alpnte Carlo waltz was won by Mr D. Lind and Aliss Anderson and a statue waltz by Mr D. Coxhead and Miss M. Coxhead. Alessrs W. AValsbe and D. Lind were masters of ceremonies. Competitions finalised were: Leather coat, Mr W. R. Boyd (Awatuna); cake, Aliss A. Collins; pig, Air AY. A. Bayliss (Opunake); baby’s set, Airs M. Bourke (Awatuna) ; dinner set, Air S. Hodges; rug, Airs Alty (Awatuna);. dinner, Mrs R. F. Tindle (who gave the turkey to be auctioned); box of tea Air P. Gatenby (Awatuna); box of chocolates, Airs R. Sturgeon.
